Saturday 24 April Stacksteads 1st XI vs Salesbury Match Report
Stacksteads got off to a winning start with a comfortable 70 run victory over the vistors, Salesbury, at New Hall Hey on
As summer finally arrived in the valley it looked like a ‘bat first’ day, however new Stacky captain Jonny Butterworth was
disappointed to be asked to set a total on what, due to horrendous pre-season weather, was a slow and low wicket that
made timing shots very difficult.
The skipper opened up with new signing Zain Abdin, the latter showing great intent from the start. Jonny was bowled for 4
after a good yorker from Spencer. Zain and Matt Croney added 32 for second wicket before Matt chopped on for 3 off
youngster Rawson. Andy Holt and Zain took the score past 100, with Zain the main aggressor as Holt played a supporting
role before skying a full ball from spinner Blackman to be caught at cover for 24.
Ellis Hussey added a quick fire 15 before being trapped in front by Spencer. Paul Scaife provided the only other
meaningful support for Zain, scoring 11 before holing out in similar fashion to Holt. Zain continued serenely to 90 before
being bowled by a good ball from Spencer to be cruely denied a debut ton as fatigue set in after what was a magnificent
The tail offered little resistance as Stacky were bowled out for 175, which was considered very competitive on this
surface. Barry Spencer (5 for 35) and Pete Blackman (4 for 30) were the stand out bowlers for Salesbury.
Stacksteads made a great start in the field with veteran seamer Matt Hussey bowling a magnificent opening spell in tandem
with Andy Jones. Hussey rarely bowled a bad ball and had the vistors in big trouble at 27 for 4. Hussey first bowled Cook
and good catches from Mikey Jones off a skyer at mid-on, Croney clutching a well hit drive in his chest at short extra cover
and Ellis Hussey clutching a sharp cut shot high above his head at slip gave Hussey figures of 4 for 17 from his 9 overs.
Slow bowling was then the order of the day as Tom Thompson’s leg spin combined with Matt Croney’s slow seamers as
Stacky worked their way through the Salesbury tail. Thompson got the next breakthrough, having Wilson stumped by stand
in wicket keeper Andy Holt. Croney then bowled Rawson and combined with Holt for 2 more sharp stumpings. Thompson
trapped Williams in front before Croney rounded off the match, trapping Luke Spencer in front LBW. Thompson finishing
with 2 for 45 from 11 overs and Croney 4 for 23 from 10.
Peter Blackman was left frustrated for the vistors, playing a good hand for 56 not out as he ran out of partners as
Salesbury reached 105 all out.
Man of the match for Stacksteads Zain Abdin.
Stacky 2nds fell to an opening day defeat at Whalley as they were dismissed for 82 with only new skipper, Max Hussey,
reaching double figures, running out of partners and finishing on 21 not out.
Stacky managed to take 3 wickets as Whalley reached the target and claimed a 7 wicket victory.
